While working at the bar of the Mala Mala Game Reserve, (South Africa’s premier safari destination at the time ), Jason was invited to an interview as a trainee game ranger and within days had packed up all his belongings and driven 2200km to Mala Mala. Within 2 months Jason was traversing the riverbeds and open savannah of Mala Mala as a qualified game ranger and using his father’s camera he started capturing the amazing sights he was showing his guests on a daily basis. Jason’s love for the African bush was rekindled and he spent the next two years enjoying the wilderness of Mala Mala. It was also here that Jason met his wife, Ursula. The couple wanted to find a small camp in Botswana that they could manage together but permits proved challenging. In order to build up experience they looked for an alternative in South Africa and in 2001 they moved to Kapama Game Reserve near Hoedspruit, South Africa where they took up management of a 10 bed lodge. The move took place after 3 months of “down time” in Cape Town where the couple worked for Cheetah Outreach where they spent their days volunteering and working with these rare and endangered animals.
Whilst at Kapama, Jason was able to focus on getting his images published and on the market. After a year it was decided to move to the United Kingdom to explore further opportunities and in November 2002 Jason joined Marks & Spencer as a Manager. Jason and Ursula now live in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire and have two children, Savannah and Caleb. Jason’s images have been published in numerous books and calendars in South Africa, some being used to promote South African tourism. He has also achieved semi-final status in the world renowned Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards. His portfolio has also been published in a popular UK photographic magazine.
Jason’s love for the bush has never faded and it is his hope to return regularly and show others, including his children, the hidden treasures of Africa.
Jason Keywood was born in Cape Town, South Africa.
At sixteen his family took a holiday to the famous Kruger National Park. Jason was fortunate enough to spend a night visiting a friend in an exclusive private game reserve adjoining the Kruger Park and it was this that forged is love for African wildlife. At the same time Jason was working on a career as a pilot in the South African Air Force and whilst being selected as part of 15 candidates out of 3000, his hopes were cut short by the changing political situation in South Africa around 1994. To mould a future for himself in the country’s challenging economic environment, Jason completed a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with Andrew’s University, Michigan USA. After graduating he struggled to find work and almost a year passed before Jason decided some time was needed away from the city and home to think things through.
